Hard drives in the computer store data and let you get it back whenever you need.A 1TB hard drive is a special variation of this device, it lets you store 1 Terabytes of data, or 1000 gigabytes.

Hard drives have been using a magnetic principal to store data for the last few decades. It involves a metal disc coated in a layer that holds magnetic status set by the head hovering just a whisker above the surfaces.

External Hard Drive

These heads are able to determine the bits passing under them while the disks spin away at 4200, 5400 or 7200 rounds per minute in conventional hard disk. This bit is interpreted by internal electronics and then passed on to the motherboard where the operating system can catch it and finally find out what file it is and where it is supposed to go.

A terabyte is a measurement unit for data stored. This is 1000 Gigabytes or to make it more tangible, you would be able to store 220 one sided DVDs on a HDD this big. That’s the capacity of 125 8GB iPods, or equal to 225,000 good quality mp3 tracks. It is enough for most people to store all their albums, movies and documents at home. And if they ever run out of it, there are 1.5TB drives and another 1TB hard disk drive is not very expensive either.

There are two kinds of connectors you should be aware of when you choose a hard disk. The first and oldest connector is the PATA. You will be able to tell it, because it’s about 2 inches wide and has 80 wires running in it. It’s being phased out in favor of the SATA. The sate connector and cable is about the same as a USB connector and cable. It’s faster, more reliable and the controller electronics is more sophisticated. Most modern motherboards and hard disks come with this, if you have the connector, get SATA hard disk drives.

Sata hard disks are faster in data transfer and the manufacturing prices of cables are also lower for obvious reasons. A 80 copper wire cable requires more material while SATA only uses 7 wires.

A 1TB hard drive is slowly becoming factory standard for even OEM computers, it’s the new common capacity. If you’re after a new model because your old HDD died, or simply ran out of capacity, refer to forum threads and reviews before purchasing one. You are going to save yourself some frustration.

Want to Increase Your PS3 Hard Drive to 250GB? Here’s How

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

First things first you are going to need a hard drive, your current one is probably a 40gb 2.5″ sata 5400rpm so you need to look on places like amazon, misco etc… for any hard drive that is 2.5″ sata 5400rpm and has the size in GB that you want. Sony recommend that you don’t go faster than 5400rpm, so don’t, in case it has adverse effects your shiny new ps3, and there are plenty of 5400rpm to choose from at the right price.

Secondly you are going to need an external drive or USB memory stick to backup your game saves, downloads etc… To see how much space you will need on an external device go to Settings>System Settings>System Information, this will then display how much free space you have on your system so you have to use some maths to work out how much space you have used, e.g. “free space 30GB/40GB” means you have 30gb free space out of 40gb so you have used 40gb – 30gb = 10gb

External Hard Drive

there are two ways of backing your information up, the cheaper way is to use a USB pen drive, to back up your game saves, an 8gb should be enough and can be bought for around £10 if you don’t have one already. To do, this insert your USB drive into a USB slot on your ps3, then go to Game>Saved Data Utility> then highlight the game save data you want to back up e.g. COD4> press triangle to bring up the menu> select “copy”> you will then be asked to “select destination” and your USB pen drive should be listed, Highlight the USB drive and press “X”, the game save data will now be saved on your USB. Repeat this method for all your game saves. If you have enough space left after this is done on your USB then you can also back up any media you have on the ps3. If you have only used around 7gb on your ps3 (highly unlikely!) you can do a full system back up which is explained below

Want to Increase Your PS3 Hard Drive to 250GB? Here’s How

The other method is to do a system back-up on an external drive, which must be in the FAT-32 format, attach your external drive to your ps3 and go to Settings>System Settings>Back up utility>Back up this will then back up all your information to your external drive.

The first method is probably the best if you don’t already have an external drive for cost issues, as

your user account and PSN account info and updates are stored on the ps3′s internal flash memory. It is only your media, game saves and downloaded content/media that is stored on the HDD, so if you do a backup of all your media and game saves you will be ready to go, once the ps3 ormats your new HDD. But if you are using a wireless router make sure you know your WEP key as you will have to put that back in when your new HDD is in.

Also downloaded games like Tekken 5 can’t be backed up, so you will have to download them again, this is not a problem as you get 5 downloads of each title you buy, simply go to the playstation store and go to download history where all the games/media you have ever downloaded will be listed, then simply press download on the highlighted game.

For the next bit you will need;

A small flat head screwdriver

A small Philips screwdriver

Somewhere flat and free of dust/dirt to work

O.k. So we have our nice new HDD, and we have backed up all the data we want to, it is now time to remove the original HDD. First turn off the ps3 and remove all power cables for safety, now locate the drive cover on the left hand side of the system, it should have a HDD sticker on it or a label saying “detach this cover when removing the hard drive” get your small flat head screw driver and prise off this cover, this will then reveal the HDD.

You should now see your HDD and a metallic BLUE screw, get your Phillips screw driver and remove the blue screw, this is the screw that holds the HDD in place on your ps3, once this is removed flip up the metal handle that is to the left of where the screw was and slide the HDD towards the FRONT of the ps3 to dislodge it from the internal connections, you can now pull the HDD carefully towards you and it will slide straight out.

You now have access to your HDD out side the ps3, you will now have to remove the tray that is attached to your original HDD, there are four Phillips screws, two on either side, that need to be removed, once this has been done remove your old ps3 HDD out of the tray and put in your new 2.5MM SATA Notebook HDD then replace the 4 screws to hold it in place.

Now your new HDD is in the ps3 caddy, you now have to install it into your ps3, which is the reversal of removal. First push carefully the new caddy into the HDD space, but remember to keep it to the right hand side of the slot (or the front of the ps3), when it touches the back of the HDD space use the handle to push it to the left (or back of the ps3) to locate the HDD connections on the PS3 connections, you will know when this has been done correctly when the space where the blue screw goes lines up with the hole on the ps3. Once it is lined up you can now put the Blue screw back in to secure the HDD to the ps3, replace the HDD cover and turn your system on.

Now as soon as the console boots up you will presented with a screen asking you to format your new HDD, as your ps3 has realised there is a new HDD installed, you must select “yes” twice as a ps3 safety precaution in case you erase your hard drive by accident!

This will take around 2 minutes and you will then be asked to reboot your system. Once you have rebooted you can now check if your mod has been successful (fingers crossed!) Go to System>System Settings>System Information, this will display your free space that should reflect the size of the replacement HDD you have just installed, but don’t start worrying if it is 15 – 20GB short of what you expected as this is taken up by the ps3 for system use.

You now have a new bigger hard drive, all you need to do now is put your game saves/media back on, simply connect your USB/hard drive go to games>saved data utility>USB device(or what ever you used to back up your data) you can now highlight the game you want to copy onto your new HDD, press triangle and select “copy” repeat this for all your game saves and media and away you go, you now have a bigger HDD and your new ps3 is back to normal. It’s pretty easy really, it just takes time to save all your games and put them back on, but well worth it for all that extra space!

If you choose to perform this modification then ps3offer.co.uk accepts no responsibility if you harm or break your ps3 while performing this task. If you are not confident you can do this procedure then please leave it to someone who can.

Whether it’s those precious family photographs, important work files, or video and audio files, it’s really important to keep a back up just for that worst case scenario.

External Hard Drive

There’s lots of simple ways you can do this, depending on the amount of files you want to back up. One way is using a USB memory stick. These are ideal for backing up a moderate amount of information and allows you to easily transport it around with you to work, or university.

The Importance of Backing Up Files on an External Hard Drive

Alternatively if you want to store a lot of data, whilst still being able to easily transport your files around with you, a great option is an external hard drive. These are a fantastic way of backing up the files you want to keep safe, whilst also freeing up space on your main computer. Removing files to make room for new files came become a tiresome and mundane task very quickly. By transferring some of the files from your main hard drive to an external hard drive, it keeps them safe in case anything happens to your computer, and also frees up some of that much needed storage space.

External hard drives are really easy to use; you simply connect it to your computer and transfer the files across. They are usually lightweight too; no-one wants to be carrying around extra weight if you don’t have to!

The type of files you want to back up, and how many files you want to store will determine what size you need. You can find a whole range to suit your size, budget, or style requirements. Most people opt for a 500Gb hard drive allowing you to store thousands of files, songs, or pictures. If you have lots of movie or video files and you still need more than this, you can go up to a 1 or 2Tb hard drive. Tb means Terabyte is a huge 1000 Gigabytes. This size is for those of you who have a serious amount of files to be backed up.

You can get external hard drives in an array of colours, and there is definitely something to suit everyone’s budget. It really is worthwhile investing in an external hard drive if want to free up some storage space, and keep those important files safe and sound.

External Hard Drives – The Growing Need For Them

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

What is a hard drive?

Hard drives are a computer component that holds data. All computers at least have one in their system to hold all the information for the operating system, any programs the computer might have and other user and personal information. Because these are internal, the problem is that all the threats and Trojans have arisen and if they are able to get to it, it can cause problems to your data. Now the need for external hard drives have become popular.

External Hard Drive

Why use one?

External Hard Drives – The Growing Need For Them

There are three main reasons that someone may choose to use an external drive:

Backup - Suppose that your main system got corrupted or invaded by spyware, Trojans etc. then, you are able to still have all your data that you copied before the drive failed. This can prove to be very needy. You can always have that data and even transfer it back into your computer.

On the Go- If you are on the go and want to take music, pictures, files, application, Programs wherever you go, they are a good use for that. You just have to plug the USB cord into a computer and view all your files easily.

Protect information- you can put all your personal information in an external hard drive and other sensitive documents. Nobody will be able to access them except for you.

What do external drives include?

An external one isn’t in your computer itself,it can be taken anywhere. It is larger than a normal hard drive and it contains its own cooling fan. It can rest on a tabletop or counter and it can be connected to any computer or laptop with usb. They come with sleek designs and are very useful. There are also many ways to use them.

How to Choose the Right External Hard Drive

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

There are many reasons you may want to consider getting an external hard drive. You may need a separate drive to store mass amount of photos and media. Or, you may simply just want a storage unit which can transfer files quickly and easily from computer to computer. With an external hard drive, you can basically take you entire computer with you everywhere you go!

There are two kinds of hard disk drives. You can get a USB drive, or a Firewire interface drive. The latter perform the same function as the USB drive, but they are more expensive. If you need a top of the line hard drive, you will want to consider a Firewire interface drive.

External Hard Drive

The difference between a USB and Firewire drive really comes down to sheer speed. Firewire drives are faster, and therefore, they are better for individuals who want an external drive to store movies. Most filmmakers will choose a spacious Firewire drive to store all of their raw footage.

How to Choose the Right External Hard Drive

It is also important to take into consideration what you will be using the unit for. If you have a large amount of media and/or photos that need to be backed up, you should buy your unit based on storage capacity. You will be surprised at how quickly your space being taken up with rise on your external hard drive. Many people choose to buy spacious external drives for the purpose of storing movies. If you like to watch movies directly from your hard drive, you will absolutely want to get an external drive. Movies take up a great deal of space, so don’t risk slowing down your computer by storing multiple movies directly on your internal drive. You will be surprised at the incredible amount of storage many of the top units actually have, and it’s definitely worth the few extra bucks.

Another factor that goes into purchasing the right hard drive includes how much physical room the device takes up. If you’re going to be transporting it often, you will want to choose a device that is relatively small and light. However, it is important to keep in mind that the hard disk drive‘s size will be largely dependent on how much information it can store. If you decide to get a hard drive with hundreds of gigabytes of storage, then you should expect to purchase a device that is a similar size to that of your internal hard drive. If you don’t need that much space, you can always consider getting a pocket size USB drive. These drives have come down in price, and most of them store around 5 gigabytes of information.

Also, you will want to keep the hard drive‘s speed in mind, especially if you’re using the device to store movies, videos, and music. The faster the drive, the quicker your media will load. Additionally, your movies and music will be less likely to lag if played from a fast drive (such as Firewire interface drive). There are hundreds of reasons to get an external drive. What’s yours?

How To Recover Data From Scratched Hard Drive

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

A hard drive, also known as a hard disk, a hard disk drive or an HDD is an important component in a computer. All the programs and files are stored in this hard drive. If the drive is damaged, you lose all the data i.e. all the files and the programs. Each year, an alarmingly large amount of important data that has not been backed up is lost due to failed hard disks. This has led to the recent boom in the hard drive recovery industry.

In video and cassette tapes, information is stored in long thin strips of tapes and their surfaces are coated with polished magnetic material. Similarly, the hard disc also contains round platters (plates) which are made up of glass or Aluminum and are coated with polished magnetic material. A very clean polished surface is an important criterion for the proper functioning of a hard disc. Even the smallest particle on the surface of the hard disc will cause damage to the files stored in it.

External Hard Drive

Data is a piece of formatted readable information. There are two types of storages namely, primary storage or internal memory, and the secondary storage. Few examples of the secondary storage devices are the hard drive, floppy discs, and CDs. In a hard disc, data is stored on the coated surface of the platter. Magnetic coating plays an important role in data storage as well as data recovery.

How To Recover Data From Scratched Hard Drive

The hard disc has a head which reads the data on the platter. When you start read from the hard disk, the arm with the head moves back and forth across the surface very quickly (50 times per second).

Hardware failure can occur by human error like dropping it on the floor, by natural disasters like flood, fire, by dust particles, by electrical short circuit, by PCB failure or by a virus attack. Hardware components which normally fail are the platters and the head. If any dust particles, finger prints or water come in contact with the surface of the platter, it gets damaged. Similarly, head can also get crashed.

Hardware failure can be avoided by keeping the system in a clean and temperature and humidity controlled environment. Extra tightening of the mounting screws can also cause damage to the hardware. The hardware should be opened in a specialized room only.

If the problem is in the hardware, switch off the system and approach the nearest data recovery services centre.

How to Buy Good Quality External Hard-Drives

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

Storing data in a safe place when not in your computer is important to save it in the event of computer crashes, accidental erasures and virus or malware attacks. Having a back up of your valuable files is needed to avoid the risk of losing data and can be done by using external harddrives.

Portable hard drives are an important tool for people to store and protect their computer data. Many brands of these hard drives are now available to suit the specific needs of computer users whether it is for personal or business use.

External Hard Drive

In order to get the best deals on purchasing an external hard disk, one should be aware of the qualities and features offered by the hardware companies. Among the factors to consider are speed in reading and writing data, location of a power source, quality and durability, seismic capacity and weight of the device.

How to Buy Good Quality External Hard-Drives

Evaluating the speed of the drive is of utmost important in data transmission. Because if the speed of transfer of files from your computer to the external harddrives is slow, it will consume more power, which in the case of a laptop will lessen its battery life and may cause interruption and data loss.

It is also vital to determine various connectivity solutions being offered for existing computers and laptops for faster and efficient data transfer during backs-ups.

The choice of connection is necessary to provide higher speed connections in transferring or backup of your data to the media. USB 2.0 is a standard connection used for today’s computers, which is much faster compared to earlier versions.

It is useful to get an external drive that supports firewire and eSata connections because it offers faster transfer rate compare to USB for uninterrupted back-up operations to your computer’s external harddrives.

It is also important to look at the power supply that powers the hard drives. Often bad motherboards are causing the computer not to detect the external hard disk, especially if it is powered using the USB. There are many external disks that also require an external power source for more efficient use.

The durability in case of an accidental fall or knock is one of the most important things to consider.

Many companies offer high degree of seismic capacity on their external dries to avoid the damage on the external drives in case they fall to the ground. Most offer a powerful hard disk that can withstand damage and still operate in the case of any accidents.

When getting a quality branded external hard drive it is also important to know if the external harddrives you are purchasing are of top quality and you can do this by looking at the reviews and comparisons of each of the top external hard drive models in all the best brands.

Laptop Repair – Upgrading the Internal Hard Drive

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

One relatively simple laptop repair that home users can accomplish is to upgrade the internal hard drive to a larger capacity and faster hard disk. This article looks at the advantages and disadvantages of doing this, especially in comparison to just using an external USB hard drive.

Many people are surprised to find out that upgrading your internal hard drives on a laptop is a relatively simple thing to do. The steps involve cloning the data and operating system from the original drive onto your new drive (using software), then swapping over the drives.

External Hard Drive

On the plus side, there are numerous upgrade kits around these days to simplify the cloning process and can even provide a USB harness that makes the old drive reusable afterward.

Laptop Repair – Upgrading the Internal Hard Drive

If you do not feel confident enough to open up the computer yourself, then a PC/laptop repair shop be able to do the upgrade quite quickly and cheaply.

Depending on the drive you get, doing this can vastly increase the disk capacity on your laptop and may even increase disk access times. Doing such an upgrade also extends the useful lifespan of your laptop for a few more years providing more spaces (a real necessity these days given the huge data volumes we need to store).

In comparison to opting for using an external hard drive instead of making an upgrade, the external drive is portable enough to be used from computer to computer and is easily installed into any USB port.

If you are travelling frequently with your laptop, the external drive can quickly become a source of irritation (another thing to carry) and concern if it were to be stolen or lost. The upcoming USB 3.0 specification should make external disk access a lot faster, but for the time being the internal drives will still be quicker.

Using An External Hard Drive To Keep Your Data Safe

Category : External Hard Drive Articles

If you want to keep your data completely safe, you should look into types of data backup that do not require constant power supplies. While discs such as CDs and DVDs are a good way to make a smaller, permanent backup, external hard drives are another great way to back up your data safely. Just make sure that the drives do not stay connected to your computer and on – otherwise they’ll be as at risk as your normal internal drives. You don’t want your backup to be damaged in the same disaster that takes out your computer!

External hard drives are not actually new technology. In fact, these drives work in much the same way as a normal hard drive. Before external drives were affordable, there are some computer users who made external drives by setting internal drives into an outer casing. These worked fairly well, but they did not stand up to being moved around as much.

External Hard Drive

Over the last several years, external drives have become affordable, small, and easy to use. There are even some compact USB hard drives that can fit in a pocket. These drives are also much faster than they used to be, something that is being helped by the switch from serial and parallel connections to USB and firewire.

Using An External Hard Drive To Keep Your Data Safe

How much data can an external hard drive store? Most external hard drives are about the same size as a normal hard disk inside of your computer. In fact, one of the smallest capacities is just 60GB . However, there are many other disk sizes available at this point in time. Recently, external hard drives with as much as 1000GB of space have begun to appear on the market. It won’t be long before we move into true Terabyte territory. These huge storage capacities are the main reason why external hard drives are rapidly becoming the most popular form of computer backup for the normal computer user.

If you do not want to pick and choose through the files on your computer to determine which ones you want to save, don’t worry! Most of the hard drives will come with a CD that has drivers and some basic backup software on it. In most cases all you have to do is install the software, plug in the drive, and click “backup” and the software takes care of protecing your email, My Documents folder and all the most commonly backed up items.

Once again, if you are using an external hard disk for computer backup, do not leave the external drive connected to your computer. Additionally, you should also have more than one backup of your important information. You can do this by using an online backup service, or by burning your most important files to a DVD or five.

The best hard drives out there are going to be the ones built by major name brands. Maxtor, Iomega and Western Digital drives are known to be high quality and will last a long time. Purchasing a cheap, no-name external hard drive will save you money up front, but it is very likely that you will end up regretting it when it breaks down and you find out that your warranty is worthless.
